It's been said that my dear friend David Schoffman is an invention, a ruse, a careful deception perpetrated by a coterie of artistic mischief makers hoping to revive the lost spirit of Dada.
I can assure you, however plausible this theory might be, it is without merit.
Some have pointed out the striking resemblance between Schoffman and myself (frankly, I don't see it). This is hardly proof. As we grow older, artists tend to look very much alike. Back in the old days, Manet was mistaken for Monet and few could tell the difference between Van Eyck and Van der Weyden.
In any event, I would like to reassure my readers that the Los Angeles artist David Schoffman is a spectral presence. However, by no means does that confirm that he is a fictional character.
